In 1991 I have an apartment in Greenwich Village with two Korean BFFs — Jennifer and Christine. Jennifer is an Asian-American Studies and Japanese major. She had me read so much literature on Asian Americans. She taught me so much about being Asian American in this country. She's a professor of Japanese now. I use to tell her that because she's Korean she should study Korean. But she said at the time NYU didn't offer Korean language as a major.
I'm a first-generation Asian Hapa. My parents hail from the Philippines and are naturalized citizens. However, my ancestry will tell you that my ancestors have been in America for many generations. Ironically.
